Anyone interested in trying contra dancing is welcome to join us at the first dance of our season on Saturday, October 10, 2009, at 4:00 p.m. (Central Time) at Fortune Lake Camp in Crystal Falls. The dance will start with a short concert and then Glen Morningstar will call the contra dance and the Front Parlor Dance Band will provide the music. Glen is a great caller and it will be a fun dance. Earlier that day we will have a jam session for those that want to bring instruments (1:00 – 3:00).

Hi, I like to dance, but I am not that good I am currently enrolled in social dance for beginners at the SDC and I plan to take social dance for intermediates in the spring. i enjoy dancing very much and I was looking to becoming more active on campus. I noticed your club and wondered what kind of place do you have in your club for someone such as I, one that lacks dance skills enough to instruct. What I am asking is if you accept members who have never danced before. Also, do you, as a club compete in competitions? thanks and sorry for any confusion

RESPONSE: Yes, you can come, learn, get involved, whatever you wish. We are open to everyone, enjoy new people and new faces all the time. We will teach you how to become instructors, how to be an E-board member, and even how to set up dances workshops, etc etc. If you want to become a part of the club, by all means do so! As for competitions, we don’t have that many, but from time to time we have one. And that is no problem at all. Thank you and hope to see you at the club.

Are these the times for the club dances with instruction? Like last year’s on Fri/Sun from 6-8?

RESPONSE: Our new dance times are posted on the website. Check the times. They should be
Thursday 9p-11 and Sunday from 4:00-5:30.

some people need to learn not to push someones comfort level without their permission to try it.

RESPONSE: Also noted. I as well as some others are guilty of this. But, there are some dances like Tango and Blues, that when you enter the room, you should expect to not have a comfort level at all. Both dances are EXTREMELY sultry. However, this should not find its way into swing, salsa, etc. So, we should be more perceptive to this sort of thing.

There should be more switching between partners in order for us to always be dancing and learning from all others

RESPONSE: Dually noted, we will see what we can do in changes of style of teaching. I know that each person has their own tendencies. But this is an area where you have to contemplate a little bit. Some people come with a partner and want to dance with them the entire time, while others who don’t have partners, want to switch to get the chance to dance with others.

So, we will push it a little more, but we will vocalize that they don’t necessarily need to.

There’s a small error in your history, there.

“….MTU’s campus was lacking in dance diversity; all we had was Latin and Swing, there was no Ballroom or other ethnic dances….”

Not true. In 2002 the MTU Ballroom Dance Team was founded. They travelled to competitions as far as Indianapolis (there were a couple articles about them in the paper).

What you’re doing is commendable, but you’re not the first.
